Open call for circus artists, dancers and physical performers interested in working site-specifically in a former industrial area in Copenhagen. The 5-day masterclass will welcome 16 European participants testing and exploring physical movement in an open air laboratory.
The masterclass explores contemporary circus, dance and movement in Refshaleøen’s specific environment. At the same time it is also a workshop audition for a large-scale production scheduled for Metropolis Festival in August 2015.
The masterclass will be led by Danish choreographer/dancer KITT JOHNSON, who is also the main director of the performance in 2015.
The group will explore different areas on Refshaleøen related to water, earth, air and verticality. Kitt Johnson will together with the participants discover the possibilities of working physically in/with these elements in Refshaleøen’s crumbling industrial wasteland. There will be a mix of working in a group and individually with Kitt as the mentor, and you will contribute to and influence the process with your ideas and creativity.
There will be an indoor space functioning as the base, but expect to be working a lot outdoor as well.
Refshaleøen is an island at the outskirts of Copenhagen – just across the water from the Little Mermaid. It used to be the home of the B&W shipyard, and now it’s transformed into a post-industrial “wasteland” hosting creative businesses and events. Historic industrial buildings, disused locks, docks and open landscapes will be the setting for the masterclass.
Danish dancer and choreographer Kitt Johnson has been developing her unique artistic universe for more than 25 years. Her style is at once minimalist, expressive and innovative. With her extreme body control and particular feel for simple but efficient stage effects, she creates intense, physical transformations exploring the deepest layers of human existence.
Kitt Johnson has been artistic director of the company Kitt Johnson X-act since 1992. With this company she has created more than 50 productions nationally as well as internationally. Her trademark is solo performance, but her repertoire is wide and also includes ensemble works, contemporary circus, site-specific work, and children’s performance. Kitt Johnson X-act also mounts and curates performance festivals, including the site-specific MELLEMRUM biennale, www.mellemrum.info , contributing to her ambition to create a platform from which Danish and international performance art can engage in dialogue and share experience.
THE ORGANISER: KØBENHAVNS INTERNATIONALE TEATER
KIT is the primary force behind international performing arts in Denmark. Currently we focus on site-specific urban art and performance with the Metropolis Festival (next edition August 2015), and on contemporary circus with the Ny Cirkus Festival (next edition August 2014, during this masterclass). www.kit.dk
Dates: 18-22 August 2014
Capacity: 16 participants
Conditions: We cover costs for international and national transport, accommodation and meals during the masterclass.
We are looking for contemporary circus artists, dancers and physical performers who want to work outdoor in a site-specific context, who are curious and willing to test new ways of working and thinking, get new inspiration and move out of their comfort zone.
As the masterclass is also a workshop audition for the production in 2015, you must be available both for the masterclass dates in August 2014 and for summer 2015 (July and August). You will know at the latest in mid-September 2014 if you’ve been selected for the performance.
