They have performed over 800 shows with the circus, and each performance and production has to appeal fresh and new. Music is essential to this. Live music should be an integral part of any circus production, shaping the emotional content and excitement of the show in harmony with the performers and direction.

These workshops will demonstrate and recreate the various effects of music in the circus ring. You will explore using music within the context of an act; how different musical accompaniments can change the character of the visual spectacle, and contextualise an act within thelarger scale of a show. Also, you will discover technical and formal approaches of how to produce practical working scores to seamlessly accompany performances that often vary greatly from one night to the next.

The workshops will also be a great opportunity to work alongside the real heroes of slapstick- Buster, Harold, Charlie, Laurel and Hardy. Dave and James have a real passion for silent films and so they would like to give the opportunity for you to accompany some short film classics. It doesn’t matter what your musical ability may be, with a few short music lessons, and lots of homemade sound effects you will soon be bringing these comic geniuses back to life!

There will be body percussion workshops, opportunities to try a wide variety of different instruments, and many music games which can be used in class situations or which can become pieces in their own right.

These workshops are aimed at both circus artistes and musicians, who will be encouraged to collaborate on various projects during the workshops. The sessions will culminate in a cabaret to showcase all the new work from this week.
